Constipation

Constipation is a digestive condition in which pets experience difficulty passing stool or have infrequent bowel movements. It is a common problem in both dogs and cats and can cause significant discomfort if left untreated.

Constipation may occur due to dehydration, low-fiber diets, lack of exercise, ingestion of hair or foreign materials, obesity, intestinal blockages, or underlying medical conditions affecting the digestive tract. Older pets are generally more prone to constipation and related digestive complications.

Pets suffering from constipation may strain while passing stool, pass hard or dry feces, experience abdominal discomfort, reduced appetite, bloating, vomiting, or lethargy. In severe cases, prolonged constipation can lead to serious intestinal problems and pain.

At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinary team carefully evaluates your pet’s digestive condition to determine the exact cause of constipation and provide effective treatment. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment may include hydration therapy, dietary modifications, medications, fiber supplements, or other supportive care.

Providing proper hydration, balanced nutrition, regular exercise, and routine veterinary checkups can help maintain healthy digestion and reduce the risk of constipation in pets.
