Tick Paralysis

Tick paralysis is a rare but potentially life-threatening condition caused by toxins released from certain species of ticks while feeding on a pet’s blood. These toxins affect the nervous system and can lead to weakness, coordination problems, breathing difficulties, and temporary paralysis if not treated immediately.

The condition usually begins with mild symptoms such as weakness in the hind legs, tiredness, difficulty walking, loss of coordination, vomiting, or changes in voice and behavior. As the toxin spreads through the body, paralysis may gradually worsen and affect the entire body, including the muscles responsible for breathing.

Pets with heavy tick infestations or prolonged exposure to ticks are at a higher risk of developing tick paralysis. The condition can progress rapidly, making early diagnosis and emergency veterinary treatment extremely important.

At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinarians carefully examine pets for hidden ticks and provide immediate treatment to safely remove ticks and manage the effects of the toxin. Supportive care, medications, and close monitoring may also be required depending on the severity of the condition.

Regular tick prevention, routine grooming, and frequent inspection of your pet’s skin and coat are essential steps in protecting pets from tick paralysis and other serious tick-borne diseases.
