Kidney Failure

Kidney failure is a serious medical condition that occurs when a pet’s kidneys lose their ability to properly filter waste products, toxins, and excess fluids from the body. The kidneys play a vital role in maintaining hydration, blood pressure, and overall body balance, so any damage to these organs can significantly affect a pet’s health and quality of life.

Kidney failure may develop suddenly due to infections, poisoning, dehydration, toxins, or severe illness, or it may occur gradually over time as a chronic condition. Older pets are generally at a higher risk of developing kidney-related diseases, although dogs and cats of any age can be affected.

Common symptoms of kidney failure in pets include increased thirst, frequent urination, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, weakness, dehydration, bad breath, mouth ulcers, lethargy, and reduced activity levels. In severe cases, pets may experience breathing difficulties, confusion, or complete loss of appetite.

At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinarians perform detailed examinations and advanced diagnostic testing, including blood tests and urine analysis, to accurately evaluate kidney function and determine the severity of the condition. Treatment may include fluid therapy, medications, dietary management, kidney-supportive care, and long-term monitoring depending on the pet’s health condition.

Early diagnosis and proper medical management are extremely important in helping pets live more comfortably and slowing the progression of kidney disease. Regular health checkups, proper hydration, and balanced nutrition can also help support long-term kidney health in pets.
