Fatty Liver Disease
Fatty Liver Disease, also known as Hepatic Lipidosis, is one of the most common and serious liver disorders seen in cats. This condition occurs when excessive fat accumulates in the liver, affecting its normal function and making it difficult for the body to process nutrients and toxins properly.
The disease often develops when cats stop eating for several days due to stress, illness, sudden diet changes, obesity, or underlying medical conditions. Overweight cats are generally at a higher risk of developing fatty liver disease.
Cats suffering from fatty liver disease may show symptoms such as loss of appetite, rapid weight loss, vomiting, weakness, dehydration, drooling, jaundice, lethargy, and behavioral changes. Without timely treatment, the condition can become life-threatening and lead to severe liver failure.
At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinary team carefully evaluates your cat’s condition through physical examinations, blood testing, ultrasound evaluations, and liver function assessments to provide accurate diagnosis and treatment.
Treatment usually focuses on nutritional support, hydration therapy, medications, liver-supportive care, and managing the underlying cause of appetite loss. Early diagnosis and aggressive supportive care significantly improve recovery chances and help restore normal liver function.
Maintaining proper nutrition, reducing stress, and ensuring regular veterinary checkups are important steps in protecting cats from fatty liver disease and other liver-related complications.
