Ear Hematomas

Ear hematomas occur when blood collects inside the ear flap, forming a soft, swollen, and fluid-filled lump. This condition is commonly caused by excessive head shaking or continuous scratching of the ears, often due to underlying problems such as ear infections, allergies, or ear mites.

Dogs with ear hematomas may show symptoms such as:

  • Swelling of the ear flap
  • Pain or sensitivity when touched
  • Frequent head shaking
  • Constant scratching of the ears
  • Discomfort or irritation

If left untreated, ear hematomas can lead to permanent scarring and deformity of the ear flap, commonly known as a “cauliflower ear.”

At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinarians carefully examine the condition and recommend the most suitable treatment, which may include medical management or surgical correction depending on the severity of the hematoma.

It is also important to identify and treat the underlying cause, such as ear infections or parasites, to prevent recurrence and protect your pet’s ear health.
