Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a long-term progressive condition in which the kidneys gradually lose their ability to function properly over time. CKD is one of the most common health problems seen in older dogs and cats and requires continuous medical care and monitoring to maintain a pet’s quality of life.
The kidneys are responsible for filtering waste, balancing minerals, maintaining hydration, and supporting overall body function. When kidney function declines, harmful toxins begin to build up in the bloodstream, affecting multiple organs and body systems.
Pets suffering from CKD may show symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, reduced appetite, vomiting, weight loss, dehydration, weakness, dull coat condition, bad breath, mouth ulcers, and lethargy. Some pets may also develop high blood pressure and anemia as the disease progresses.
At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinary team uses blood tests, urine testing, ultrasound evaluations, and other diagnostic methods to identify chronic kidney disease and assess the severity of kidney damage. While CKD cannot usually be completely cured, early diagnosis and proper treatment can help slow disease progression and improve your pet’s comfort.
Treatment plans may include specialized kidney diets, hydration therapy, medications, nutritional support, and regular health monitoring. Long-term veterinary care plays a very important role in helping pets with CKD live healthier and more comfortable lives.
