Eosinophilic Bronchopneumopathy (EBP)

Eosinophilic Bronchopneumopathy (EBP) is a relatively uncommon but serious inflammatory respiratory condition in dogs. It mainly affects the lungs and airways and is often associated with allergic or immune-related reactions within the respiratory system.

Dogs suffering from EBP typically develop a harsh, persistent cough that may sound similar to a chronic smoker’s cough.

Other symptoms can include breathing difficulty, nasal discharge, exercise intolerance, lethargy, reduced appetite, gagging, and overall weakness. In some cases, symptoms may gradually worsen over time if left untreated.

Although the exact cause of EBP is not always clear, environmental allergens, airborne irritants, dust, smoke, and immune system reactions are believed to contribute to the condition. Certain dog breeds may also have a higher risk of developing EBP.

At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinary team performs detailed respiratory evaluations and diagnostic testing to identify the condition accurately and rule out other respiratory diseases. Treatment usually focuses on reducing airway inflammation, controlling symptoms, and improving breathing comfort.

Management of EBP may include anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroids, antibiotics if infections are present, and minimizing exposure to environmental triggers such as smoke, strong chemicals, and dust. With proper long-term care and monitoring, many dogs can maintain a comfortable and active lifestyle.
