Kennel Cough
Kennel cough, medically known as Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis, is one of the most common respiratory infections seen in dogs. It is a highly contagious condition that spreads quickly among pets through coughing, sneezing, direct contact, or contaminated objects such as food bowls, water bowls, toys, and bedding.
Dogs that frequently visit boarding facilities, grooming centers, dog parks, training centers, or daycare environments are at a higher risk of exposure. Puppies, senior dogs, and pets with weak immune systems are generally more vulnerable to severe infection and complications.
The most common symptom of kennel cough is a strong, dry, hacking cough that may sound like choking or gagging. Some dogs may also develop sneezing, nasal discharge, watery eyes, mild fever, tiredness, breathing discomfort, and reduced appetite. In mild cases, symptoms may improve within a few weeks, but untreated infections can sometimes progress into more serious respiratory conditions such as pneumonia.
At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinarians carefully examine your pet’s symptoms and overall respiratory health to provide accurate diagnosis and proper treatment. Depending on the severity of the condition, treatment may include medications, cough suppressants, antibiotics, supportive care, and rest.
Preventive vaccination, maintaining hygiene, and avoiding exposure to infected dogs are some of the best ways to protect your pet from kennel cough and maintain long-term respiratory health.
