Pneumonia

Pneumonia is a serious respiratory condition that causes inflammation and infection in a dog’s lungs, making breathing difficult and uncomfortable. The condition occurs when the air sacs inside the lungs fill with fluid, pus, or mucus, reducing the normal flow of oxygen throughout the body.

Pneumonia in dogs can develop due to bacterial infections, viral infections, fungal infections, inhaled foreign particles, allergies, or aspiration of food and liquids into the lungs. Puppies, senior dogs, and pets with weak immune systems are generally at a higher risk of developing severe complications.

Common symptoms of pneumonia include persistent coughing, fever, rapid breathing, breathing difficulty, nasal discharge, tiredness, dehydration, loss of appetite, and reduced activity levels. Some dogs may also experience loud breathing sounds and weight loss if the condition becomes severe.

At Shiva Pet Clinic, our veterinarians carefully evaluate your pet’s respiratory health using physical examinations and diagnostic tests to identify the underlying cause of pneumonia. Depending on the severity of the infection, treatment may include antibiotics, oxygen support, fluid therapy, respiratory medications, and supportive care.

Early diagnosis and timely treatment are extremely important to prevent complications and support faster recovery. Maintaining proper vaccination schedules and reducing exposure to respiratory infections can also help protect pets from pneumonia.
